Kannur University was established by the Act 22 of 1996 of Kerala Legislative Assembly. The University by the name “Malabar University” had come into existence even earlier by the promulgaton of an Ordinance by the Governor of Kerala, on 9th November 1995. The University was inaugurated on 2nd March 1996 by the Hon. Chief Minister of Kerala. The objective of the Kannur University Act 1996 is to establish in the state of Kerala a teaching, residential and affiliating University so as to provide for the development of higher education in Kasargod and Kannur revenue Districts and the Mananthavady Taluk of Wayanad District.
Kannur University is unique in the sense that it is a multi-campus university with campuses located at various locations under its jurisdiction. The Act envisages that the University shall establish, maintain, manage and develop campuses at Kannur, Kasargod, mananthavady, payyannur, Thalassery, kanhangad and such other places as are necessary for providing study and research facilities to promote advanced knowledge in Science and Technology and other relevant disciplines. The Congregation of Mother of Carmel (C.M.C.), founded in 1866 by Blessed Chavara Kuriakose Elias and the Carmelite Missionary Fr. Leopold Beccaro, is the first indigenous Congregation of Kerala. Sad at the barrenness of Syro-Malabar Church of Kerala in nurturing saints, they founded our Congregation so that women also could have the same chance, as men to lead a consecrated life, love God and neighbor and serve with total commitment.Vimala College is a Christian College under the Management of the Nirmala Province, Thrissur, Kerala of C.M.C. (The Congregation of Mother Carmel) in the Roman Catholic Church. The College is under the religious jurisdiction of the Catholic Bishop of Thrissur. 'Vimala stands for the 'Immaculate Conception' her motto being "Veritas et Amor" - Truth and Love. Mar Athanasios College for Advanced Studies Tiruvalla (MACFAST)- Kerala, India, is a postgraduate school that offers specially developed courses in the fields of Information Technology, Biosciences, and Management Studies. It is owned and managed by the Corporate Educational Agency of the Catholic Diocese of Tiruvalla, a religious and charitable society with His Excellency Isaac Mar Cleemis as the President and Patron. A large number of schools, colleges, hospitals, hostels, medical and paramedical institutions (Pushpagiri Medical College, Tiruvalla), and research centres have been established throughout India in the past 70 years. Situated amidst lush green tropical trees, MACFAST, is housed in a modern, multi- storeyed building with a total built-up area of 2,00,000 sq. ft. It comprises lecture halls, seminar rooms, conference halls, offices, and a well-stocked Business and IT library as well as a digital library.
