The State Planning Board was first constituted in this State in September 1967 with Chief Minister as Chairman and a non-official as part time Vice-Chairman.Apart from minister for Finance and Chief Secretary to the Government there were three other fulltime members.The Director,Bureau of Economics and Statistics was Member Secretary.The Board was formed with a view to enabling the State Governmrnt to formulate development plans based on a scientific assessment of the resources of the State and the growth priorities.the board was assigned the task of preparing the Annual Economic Review to be presented along with the Budget Document to the State legislature.This item continues tobe a regular activity of the board.
This unit implements the various schemes proposed by the central and state governments for soil conservation. Land development and soil conservation are the main responsibilities of this unit. The state schemes are now being entrusted on the district panchayaths as a part of the Democratic Decentralization. Some of the important schemes of the soil conservation unit includes the National Watershed Development Project for the Rainfed Areas, Kundah River Project etc.‘Keralakarshakan’ is a prestigious fortnightly farm journal published by the Bureau. The Bureau is associated with the broadcasting of agriculture news by AIR. ‘Farm Guide’ is a prestigious annual publication of the bureau. Besides these things the Bureau prepares and distributes leaflets, booklets etc containing vital agricultural informations. In association with the state library council, the bureau is implementing an ‘Agricultural Book Corner Programme’ which aims at distributing the agriculture related publications of the Kerala Bhasha Institute to the libraries at one-third price. The Bureau is in possession of the most modern communication aids. It plays an appreciable role in providing comprehensive informations required for the extension and developmental aspects of Kerala’s agriculture.
